Mid America Freedom Band

Rebranding

The Mid America Freedom Band is a community non-profit LGBT+ band operating in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2016, the organization was researching new merchandise fundraisers but had difficulty finding options that were affordable with a full color logo, and was unable to reproduce their existing logo in one color due to it’s skeuomorphic nature.

The board of directors decided that the logo needed to be updated to be more modern, and to allow for more use in one color as needed, and the brand colors should be updated to be more ADA compliant when in use.

Website Redesign

Once the logo was updated, the next set was to redesign the organization’s website. The organization was concerned with creating a mobile friendly website that would be easy to update and user friendly.

The goals of the website were to:

  • Share upcoming events

  • Increase new members

  • Share the band’s history

  • Increase large-scale donations

Season Branding

The Mid America Freedom Band has unique branding for every season that is related to the theme the artistic director has chosen for the concert series. This branding includes program covers, social media posts, and website graphics. They are generally designed in the summer between seasons. The above image is from the 2022-2023 season, the first season performed in person since 2020.

The band is currently in their 21st season, and planing season 22 and 23.

More than a Concert Band

The Mid America Freedom Band has three branches: The concert band, referenced as the Mid America Freedom Band, the jazz band, named Mighty Mo Combo, and the pep band. The branding for the Mighty Mo Combo was updated in 2022 to create a more versatile logo and to better match the branding of the main band.

Final Result

Since 2016, the Mid America Freedom Band has seen a growth from 60 active members to over 85, an increase in large scale donations, and quadrupled their sales in limited edition merchandise at concerts. I continue to work with the organization to create season branding and maintain their website on a pro-bono basis.
