Year of Type: A Personal Challenge

For 2017 I have set a personal challenge: to draw one lettering project every day. These projects don’t need to be anything groundbreaking (in fact, so far they haven’t been), but they do need to focus on a few areas that I want to improve on with my hand lettering projects. Those improvements include:

  1. Making script lettering less rigid and more flowing
  2. Working on flourishes
  3. Improving my script “K” (seriously, I can’t do it and it drives me crazy)
  4. Combining type and illustration more often
  5. Rougher lettering styles
  6. Script line spacing

So far I have kept my promise to draw every day (even if on the third I just drew a doodle as a sort of cheat day). I haven’t created anything that I would consider retail worthy, although I do enjoy the January 4th drawing.

In the next few weeks I plan on creating a specific webpage for the year of type, with drawings organized by the week, so check back to see my progress through the year. Drawings are uploaded daily to my instagram account as well.
